The Junction Arts & Civic Centre

East Yorkshire's multi award-winning arts centre on Paradise Place — a theatre, cinema, cafe bar and creative space sharing one gold-brimmed timber building with Goole Town Council's offices and council chamber.

Junction opened on 7 November 2009, an award-winning £2.475 million transformation of the unloved 1980s extension to the Victorian Goole Market Hall. Architects Henley Halebrown Rorrison reused the old market building's foundations and steel portal frame for budget and sustainability reasons, wrapping it in spruce timber panelling beneath a distinctive canopy 'brim' finished in polished gold stainless steel, whose warm glow lights the square at night. The 1,300 square-metre building, constructed by Hull firm Houlton, achieved a BREEAM Bespoke 'Very Good' sustainability rating and won a RIBA Award and the RIBA White Rose Award (Gold) in 2010, plus an AIA/UK Excellence in Design commendation in 2012.

The heart of the building is a flexible auditorium seating around 165-170 (the official site says 165; the architects quote 170), hosting live theatre, film screenings, comedy, live music and workshops, alongside rehearsal and workshop spaces, a cafe bar serving speciality teas, coffees, cakes and licensed drinks, and the Town Council's civic chamber. Junction is an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation. Access provision is strong: level entry, a lift serving ground and first floors, removable front-row seating creating wheelchair spaces with adjacent carer seats (carers go free), a hearing induction loop in the main theatre and community rooms, autism-friendly screenings, and accessible toilets with baby changing.
